- WORKING OUT WHO THAT IS -
I first sent a survey around my class, in order to determine the age group that I should aim my film at. I asked individually about each style and genre I would be incorporating into my film, to get a more rounded idea of who will want to see my production. The answers were more varied than I'd have liked, but after totting up the total number of answers for each age group, it was made apparent that the two with the equal highest, 15-20 and 20-30, would be the ideal target audience. It is a good deal broader than would be ideal, but it's something I can work with.
Next I asked some more specific questions of people in my target audience. The first two questions were really just there to reinforce what my target audience should be. The answers did not fill me with confidence, but ah well, maybe my film can be an entry point into these genres for anyone that might watch it.
The following two questions focused on what I think is possibly the more risky aspect of my film; The noir elements. These are the part that I worry will not appeal so much to the younger part of my chosen audience. These answers were a lot more encouraging. Although still not many had seen older films too much, there was a definite willingness to watch something that I might make.
And finally, I asked some more technically related questions to help in my pre-production. These were actually really helpful answers and I'm sure I'll incorporate this advice into my planning.
Since I think the age grouping in my initial survey was rather wide, it gave me room to maybe narrow it down to more suit my own preference, and as such I have opted to aim more at the younger side of it; the 15 -20's. What this does mean is that I may have to sacrifice an element of the Noir side of my production. The reason for this is of course that - meaning no disrespect to my peers - younger people simply don't go in for Noir usually. I think that in order to rake in the most potential viewers I need to keep the majority of the film's focus on the Sci-Fi elements, and have the Noir aspects be more thematic and stylistic rather than practical.
Where To Publish My Film?
YouTubeThe Choice to Upload my finished film to YouTube may seem an obvious one, but it really does make sense. YouTube is one of the most used sites in the world, with 1.7 billion individual users.
---- Taking a look at the statistics below, from the Hootsuite Global State of Digital 2022 report, we can see just how popular and frequently used the platform is. It is also key to note how my chosen target audience age group accounts for around 35% of YouTube users. |
The overlap is interesting to look at too, because depending on more frequent overlaps I might know best where to advertise my film's presence on YouTube. Here for example, Facebook and Instagram would be the most useful to promote my film on, with 79% and 77% respectively of their users also using YouTube.

Not too much to take from this other than the vast numbers of YOuTube users...Although it's a crazy thing that over a third of the worlds population has used Google.

As mentioned above, around 35% of YouTube users fall into my targeted age group. In this it's just interesting to see how the largest number of users are in that wonderful Millennial age group. This was the group that I suppose watched most when YouTube really started to grow rabidly after 2010. Now the younger age groups probably see a lot of media on sites such as Tik Tok. (Though they still frequent YouTube plenty)

Just more stats to back me up in my decision to choose YouTube.
